Abuse and Neglect
 

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.  To learn more about the history of this event and view child abuse prevention resources, please visit the Child Welfare Information Gateway’s site dedicated to this effort.  http://www.childwelfare.gov/preventing/preventionmonth/

     

Child Maltreatment 2006 is now available.  This report presents national data about child abuse and neglect known to CPS agencies in the United States during Federal fiscal year (FFY) 2006. The data were collected and analyzed through the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS) supported by the Children's Bureau.  http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/cb/pubs/cm06/index.htm

 
Chafee
 

On April 10, 2008, a webinar was held by the Children’s Bureau on the National Youth in Transition Database (NYTD).  Several resources, including a recording of the presentation are available on our web site at http://www.nrccwdt.org/rscs/rscs.html.  Please note that information related to the Question and Answer period following the presentation is forthcoming.

     
 

Youth Aging Out of Foster Care: Identifying Strategies and Best Practices” is an issue brief from the National Association of Counties.  This brief outlines the current federal framework addressing youth aging out of foster care, identifies general outcomes for these young people, and highlights model county programs and best practices that are addressing the needs of this population in innovative ways.   http://www.naco.org/Content/ContentGroups/Issue_Briefs/IB-YouthAgingoutofFoster-2008.pdf

AFCARS
 

On February 13, 2008, the Children’s Bureau presented a webinar briefing on the AFCARS 2.0 notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM). Adoption and Foster Care
 

Chapin Hall Center for Children has released the report Foster Care Dynamics 2000-2005: A Report from the Multistate Foster Care Data Archive. Using data from a sample of 348,695 children admitted to foster care for the first time between 2000 and 2005, this report provides a general overview of what happens when children are placed in foster care. The data include changes in the number of children in care, chances of entering care, placement type, movement, and exit rates.  http://www.chapinhall.org/home.aspx

Data Sources
 

The new KIDS COUNT Data Center contains more than 100 measures of child well-being, including the 10 measures used in the annual KIDS COUNT Data Book. The Data Center includes the most recent data available on Education, Employment and Income, Poverty, Health, Basic Demographics, and Youth Risk Factors for the U.S., all 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and features data for the 50 largest U.S. cities.  http://www.kidscount.org/datacenter/

 
Older Youth
 

The Urban Institute has released the report Foster Youths' Views of Adoption and Permanency. This exploratory study, conducted in Washington, D.C. and New York City, sought to examine foster youths' views of adoption, permanency, and adoption recruitment using data collected from focus groups with foster youth ages 11 to 19.  http://www.urban.org/UploadedPDF/411609_adoption_permanency.pdf

     
  The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies has released the report Aging Out of the Foster Care System to Adulthood: Findings, Challenges, and Recommendations. The authors used multiple methodologies to gather and analyze information from a diverse set of stakeholders and participants in the foster care systems. Recommendations on how to improve outcomes for youth aging out of foster care are provided.
