Managing with Data
A fundamental challenge for all child welfare agencies is to effectively use data at all levels of the organization. Workers, supervisors, managers as well as agency executive staff should use data on a daily basis to make decisions related to client, case and program level activities. This is fundamental in all current practice models. There is also an emphasis on outcomes and data by the Child and Family Services Reviews. Agencies must make use of appropriate reports in evaluating the effectiveness of agency programs in meeting client outcomes.
The National Resource Center for Child Welfare Data and Technology is prepared to assist states in meeting the technical challenges presented by effectively managing using data.
Managing with Data Technical Assistance
The NRC-CWDT is available to provide customized, State-specific technical assistance on managing with data. For example, the Resource Center has provided training of agency staff at all levels on effectively managing and using data. The Resource Center is also prepared to present “promising practices” from other states. Assistance may include examples of how states present data to staff and stakeholders so that it is easily understood or the “dashboard” concept used by some states. The Resource Center can also provide assistance in analyzing current report formats and assist with the evaluation of possible modifications to enhance their usability by staff. In many instances the Resource Center has enlisted the assistance of other states as “peer” consultants in order to provide the required level of aid to a state seeking help in this area.
