Data Analysis
Each state child welfare agency collects an enormous amount of data. Analysis of this data can contribute not only to program assessment, planning, implementation and monitoring but workload management at every level. On-going analysis of data can contribute to improvements in achievement of outcomes – safety, permanency and well-being.
The NRC-CWDT is pleased to offer States a wide range of technical assistance and products to enhance data analysis capacities.
Data Analysis Products and Links
Using Information and Data in Planning and Measuring Progress – These materials address key issues in using data, data quality, and methods of measuring improvement. Part of the T/TA Related to the Child and Family Services Review (CFSR) Process, these materials were developed by NRC-CWDT and are available at http://muskie.usm.maine.edu/helpkids/cfsrta.htm.
Results Oriented Management in Child Welfare – This web-based training site offers 21 interactive training modules in 3 major content areas. The Children’s Bureau funded this project by The University of Kansas School of Social Welfare, Office of Child Welfare and Children's Mental Health, on which NRC-CWDT and the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, Division of Children and Family Services, partnered. The site is located at http://www.rom.ku.edu/index.asp.
Core Data for the Child and Family Snapshot, Service Array – The NRCOI provides T/TA on service array. Part of the service array process is development of a Child and Family Snapshot incorporating available data about the children and families coming into the child welfare system. NRC-CWDT has developed utilities which extract core data for these snapshots from NCANDS and AFCARS submissions. A description of the snapshot and the core data, as well as the utilities to produce the data, are located on the Service Array page.
Data Analysis Technical Assistance
The NRC-CWDT is available to provide customized, State-specific technical assistance in data analysis. For example, the Resource Center can assist in identifying factors for exploration using available data, such as populations experiencing multiple placements by age, geographic area and/or service provider. We have done work with States on analyzing data for the CFSR and on Managing with Data. These efforts can be particularly beneficial when coordinated with the T/TA being provided by other members of the Children’s Bureau Resource Network.
